Speech & Pronunciation

English

I am new to the forum. I would like to know the pronunciation of "a" when used this way: The elephant killed a mouse.
That "a" before mouse. I used to pronounce it as the letter name "a" but my teacher (Canadian) corrected me and told me it should be pronounced as "Uh" like the "a" in car.

Hi, paablos2. Welcome to the Forum! I agree it is usually pronounced uh rather than ay .

  • I don't pronounce car as cuh though, but that may be normal in your teacher's Canadian dialect.

It's pronounced 'uh', which is the sound of 'a' in the name 'Hilda'.

Thus, "killed a mouse" sounds very much like "Hilda Mouse" (assuming there's someone with that name, perhaps a cousin of Mickey Mouse).
