Can I say "to greet back" if I want to mean that I'm greeting a person who's just greeted me as well?

No doubt you can find instances of the use of "greet back", but it doesn't seem like great English to me. g. instead of "I greeted him back", say "I returned his greeting".

No doubt you can find instances of the use of "greet back", but it doesn't seem like great English to me. I would find another way, e.g. instead of "I greeted him back", say "I returned his greeting".
