I agree that that is a useful tip for beginners, but caution that it's not universally true.

If you are interested in doing something, you are expressing an interest/desire to do it in the future. If you were interested to do something, the doing of it excited your interest. Compare:

Did you mean that it is also possible for us to say that someone is interested to do something, but the meaning would be different in this case? Or did you mean that we could use the 'interested to do something' only when we're talking about the 'past'?

fivejedjonI was interested to find out where he came from. The speaker actually discovered where 'he' came from. That information interested the speaker.
While I more or less understand this one passively, it's not part of my active vocabulary, so it wouldn't have occurred to me to mention it. I believe I say It was interesting to find out ... instead.
