We do not use an article before the names of famous roads but why there are some exceptions such as the Silk Road, etc.?

Hi That's interesting and I can't find a source on the web. My own understanding is: Thoroughfares that are called 'Road' and are used by many people - also UK motorways - tend to have 'The' ... - The Silk Road - The Great West Road - The Old Kent Road - The M1 Side-roads that are not well known do not have 'The', even if they are called 'Road', and neither do thoroughfares with other names such as 'Street', 'Avenue' or 'Lane' (even if they are well-known)...
