In the not very distant past , just 15 to 20 years ago, people used to get news about events around the world from television or newspapers. The meaning seems dubious to me. I don't know what part of the world you come from, but in many places people still get news from television and newspapers.

Since it is translation, we cannot change some words although we may object to them.I wondered if perhaps in the source language the word that translates literally to English "cousin" was also used more generally to mean some unspecified kind of relation or close person. However, you would no doubt already understand that.
