Left Behind

You are gone but I am still here; alone
I don’t blame thee for what I underwent,
Life of being forever on my own
I was left behind, heart filled with torment
I was only six when you left my life
You were gone before I could say goodbye
He came through the door filled with strife
“She’s gone,” he said, all I could ask was why?
How I wish to relive my childhood years
They seem distant almost like a fable
I have learned to wipe away the tears
My life is chosen and unchangeable
Though sad I am independent and strong
For once in my life its right and not wrong

This is my sonnet. My iambic pentameter is WAY off but if someone could tell me the stressed and unstressed parts of each word that would help me out so much

No, it not iambic pentameter. Do not go word by word, but by the flow of stress within the lines; metric verse always bends stress somewhat; it is a matter of how much you can get away with. I have bolded the main stressed syllables: You are gone but I am still here ; a lone I don’t blame thee for what I under went , Life of being for ev er on my own I was left be hind , heart fill ed with tor ment I was on ly six when you left my life You were gone before I could say good bye He came through the door filled with strife “She’s gone ,” he said, all I could ask was why ?

  • Compare with the stress in a Shakespearean sonnet by Keats: When I have fears that I may cease to be Be fore my pen has glean’d my teem ing brain , Be fore high pilé d books , in char act’ ry , Hold like rich garn ers the full -ripe n’d grain ; When I be hold , u pon the night’s starr’d face , Huge clou dy sym bols of a high ro mance , And think that I may never live to trace Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance; And when I feel, fair creature of an hour!

Hi

I may have spoilt some of the ideas, but this is roughly in pentameters ...

And now you're gone but I'm still here, alone
Not blaming you for what I underwent
A life of being always on my own.
Left behind, my heart was filled with pain
Barely six when you went from my life.
You were gone before I said goodbye
He came through the door and, filled with st
