There are many different peoples in Europe.

But wouldn't "people" also fit ? Because there are more expressions of people. The singular word "People", which describes a certain group of people belonging to the same relegion, people who have the same attitude or people who live in the same country.

Or the plural "people". In this case "people" could mean persons who have a different skin colour etc..

'People' would fit grammatically, but it does not carry the meaning that I presume was intended: ethnic groups.
