why cant i say i am here since 6 months

The two parts of this sentence do not fit together correctly.



'I am' refers to the present time.

'Since' refers both to the past and to the present.

It's: I am here for six months.

If it's the number of units of time (days, months), use 'for'. And if it's a specific time use 'since'. That's the way I was taught it.

I am here for six months. Note that this means the intended length of your stay is six months. It tells us nothing about when you actually arrived. eg today, yesterday, 5 months ago.



Compare 'I have been here for six months' or ' I have been here since October of last year'.

For the same reason that I can't say, "J'ai ete ici pour six mois" to mean "I have been here for six months" when I am in Paris. English and French are not the same language, so people don't say, word for word, the same things in both.
