Adverbs will almost always follow verbs.

We had to work quickly.

We had to work slowly.

We had to run quickly.

I sleep lightly.

He writes neatly.

I've looked it up and according to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary
quick may be used as an adverb. Does it still make the sentence wrong?

Main Entry: 3quick
Function: adverb
: in a quick manner

Over time, certain words such as "quick" and "slow" make it into various dictionaries as self-sufficient adverbs, but I think this results from common usage and not original English law.

I'm not being sarcastic in the least, but if you want to be respected in your writing, always use "quickly" for the adverb. To me, "quick" instead of "quickly" is as blaringly distracting as, say, "who"

quick is used an adverb in speech very often, but still scorned in writing.
