Engine smoke

Hi

A woman was getting out of the railway station. The narrator says: The Selbury station stairs smelled strongly of fish, of
years of engine smoke; but outside in the yard the air was fresh and clean.

Does by "engine smoke" the narrator means fumes from the cars?

Top answer

Well, it says 'engine', so I presume that the train is pulled by a steam engine, which belches smoke. Train cars do not emit fumes.
