Vocabulary

engage/involve desert/abandon

Hi, I've trouble telling any difference between the following pairs of words.

1. Caesar knew to cross Rubicon would be to declare war and it would ____ all Romans in a fearful strife.

I feel comfortable using involve here, but I can't be certain whether engage also goes well in the sentence.

2. Pompey's soldiers ____ him and hastened to join themselves to Caesar's army.

"deserted him" means "left him". Can I say "abandon him" to mean "To withdraw one's support or help from, especially in spite of duty, allegiance, or responsibility"?

How would you express the meaning? Which word do you usually use? Thank you!
