Do you have any idea of the source of that difference? Dictionaries offer both pronunciations, but I've always heard the guy pronunciation and had no idea that doctors use the ji pron

I believe it has to do with transliteration from Greek, which is the root of many medical terms. The hard "G" is unwarranted in any event, when you look at it. The other words in the Greek "gy" are soft—gymnasium, gymnosperm, misogyny—as are the English ones, for that matter—gypsum, gyrate, gyrfalcon.
