The ending of that war. = The end of that war?

That means ending and end have the same meaning and are interchangeable? Right?

If not, how to distinguish them?

Hi,

The end of the book. (1) = The ending of the book. (2) ?

end and ending have the same meaning and are interchangeable?

(in my dictionary:

end (noun): The final part of a period of time

ending (noun): The last part of a period of time

So, I am confused now)
