What about this? Which one sounds better?

I couldn't tell who my real friends were.

vs.

I couldn't tell where were my real friends.

These are reported questions; in this case, you use the normal word order:

- I couldn't tell who/where my real friends were.

That's fine.

You may want to consider starting a new thread, rather than adding to one that's as old as this.

The English Landuage uses an SVO order. That means we use a subject-verb-object in a complete sentence. So no, the phrases you are making are not complete sentences. "I arose" is not a complete sentence.

Hi,
Why do you think 'I arose' is not a complete sentence?
It's an intransitive verb.

Best wishes, Clive
