Ending

Which punctuating ending is preferred – in British style – 1 or 2?

1) Aspara Gus said, "I heard Rover say, 'Please don't split your infinitives'."

2) Aspara Gus said, "I heard Rover say, 'Please don't split your infinitives.' "

If #2 is preferred in BrE punctuation, do we insert a space between the the single and double quote marks at the end?

Thanks.

I prefer #2 - without the said space. Rover

Aspara Gus said, "I heard Rover say, 'Please don't split your infinitives.'"

Would it be wrong if there is no space between the inverted commas? Thanks.

The space is unnecessary.

Thanks, Rover.

I did not read your earlier post carefully. You mentioned that the space was unnecessary.
