End up in the race

Hi, What is "End up" here? I think it's different than only "End"?

"If there was any chance that Obama would end up in the race,
there were steps he could and should take beforehand to put himself in the best possible position"

Top answer

'Up' makes 'end' more conclusive, that is all. 'End up' = finally be or do.
