Does "end" mean "goal"?
Context:
When I have taken the liberty of addressing you on the course and order of your studies, I never proposed to enter into a minute detail of the art. This I have always left to the several professors, who pursue the end of our institution with the highest honour to themselves, and with the greatest advantage to the students.

I think it should be 'ends' rather than end. Then it would mean aims and intentions, the end results required. If you leave it as end it means that they want the institution to close down!

I think it should be 'ends' rather than end.
Then it would mean aims and intentions, the end results required.
If you leave it as end it means that they want the institution to close down!
Gaol really does not fit here.

My two cents. "end" doesn't sound bad to me as "goal", although "ends" is more common, of course.
