enclosing

Our early ancestors had little conception of the difference between human beings and the animal creation. To them all that had life was animated by a spirit, and the form of the enclosing body made little difference.

About the 'enclosing', is it a prticiple or a gerund?

I think it's a participle, but I'm not sure on this one...

Dear Taka, It is perhaps an adjectival participle. I do not think it is a gerund. It qualifies «body».
