Grammar

• Employee investments in this company

Hi!
I read the following grammar question in a TOEIC book:
“3. Employee ______ in this company will prove beneficial for everyone.
(A) invest
(B) invested
(C) investments
(D) investing

(Answer: C)” ((p. 182, LONGMAN PREPARATION SERIES FOR THE NEW TOEIC TEST - Intermediate Course, Fourth Edition, by Lin Lougheed))

My question is:
Which one is the correct interpretation for the above sentence? #1? Or, #2?
#1. The investments made by the company employees will be beneficial for everyone.
#2. The employees will invest in their company, and the result will be beneficial for everyone.

Thanks in advance.

Personally, I think this is not a well written question because "employee" could be viewed as a noun, investing in this company. If the answer is "C", then employee is used as an adjective describing the type of investment. I am sure the experts will comment on it.
