It's more or less a simple idea, though not always easy if English is not one's first language. I would say it's not easy because native speakers of English don't think about using emphatic do; they just do it. However, if one's first language is not English, then it stands to reason that one would be aware of using emphatic do. I would say with enough practice, it become easier to use emphatic do without thinking about it or being aware of it.

Of course, it's not necessary to use "do, "does", and "did" in sentences that are not interrogative sentences, and neither do we need to use "do", "does" and "did" in noun clauses, even if the sentence is an interrogative sentence.

Here are two examples:

You have something to say, don't you? You do have something to say, don't you?

Can you tell me what you have to say? Can you tell me what you do have to say?

A common error is to invert "do", "does" or "did" and the verb in the same way they are inverted for interrogative sentences. Here's an example of this error: I want to know what did she say. Here's the correct sentence: I want to know what she said. And now here's an example of using emphatic "did": I want to know what she did say.
