Empathetic vs. Sympathetic

Can someone here explain the difference between these two?

I have consulted several dictionaries, but none that directly compare the two.

Also the purpose for my question: Which of them is a more direct opposite of the word "blunt," although I know neither is exactly that?

But which is more? Thanks!

A dictionary will give you full details, but here are a couple of broad comments.
empathetic You can feel completely the way the other person is feeling. It's almost like you can become the other person.
sympathetic You care about and are sorry about someone's problems.
