Emotions of Americans

Hello,

First of all, I don't intend to discussion politics here in this thread I am creating as my questions are about the psychology/emotions of American audience to the speech of President Obama's.

I was watching the vedio about Obama Victory Speech 2012. And I couldn't understand why the audience cheered and applaused so frequently for every a few words, which seem to me that carry little meat. Here's an excerption.

I want to thank every American who participated in this election. (Cheers, applause.) Whether you voted for the very first time -- (cheers) -- or waited in line for a very long time -- (cheers) -- by the way, we have to fix that. (Cheers, applause.) Whether you pounded the pavement or picked up the phone -- (cheers, applause) -- whether you held an Obama sign or a Romney sign, you made your voice heard and you made a difference. (Cheers, applause.)
Could someone, I especially hope you're American, tell me why his supporters applaused or cheers on above words? I don't figure it out. Is that because cultural differences?

Many thanks!
