Eminent is a perfectly good adjective used to describe people in many different professions. Just because you don't find it to be on the same level as "statesmen" (those paragons of truth, honesty and wisdom) does not mean that others will agree with you. It's use is strictly subjective. My dictionary (the Oxford Dictionary of the English Language, unabridged edition) defines eminent as: (
