Emend and Edit

Hi

Could you please tell me if "emend" and "edit" are synonyms? My dictionaries give almost the same definitions.

Emend an essay...

Edit an essay...

Thanks,

Tom

Hi, emend - edit a text to remove errors edit - has the same meaning, but also has broader meanings related to assembling and preparing (eg the Editor of a newpaper does not just check it for errors) 'Edit' is a much more common word, I'd say. Clive

Amend is also much more common than emend. Other possible verbs are redact and proofread.
