embrace the peaks of mountains

Hi,

Could you please give me your point of view about the following sentence.

The smell of death transcends the place, embracing the peaks of mountains.

Thank you

I wonder whether "transcends" is the correct word, or whether something like "pervades" was actually meant. For me, "embracing" seems potentially wrong too. I am not exactly sure of the intention, but I wonder whether "reaching (up) to the peaks" would be better.
