The concept of "embedded" clauses is sometimes hard to understand, and some pople confuse it with "subordinate" clauses. The difference is not always easy to see. The following will not be a "book" explanation, so hopefully it will be fairly easy to understand.

I believe the explanations of the two numbered sentences are reversed regarding which is the complementizer and which is the relative pronoun.
