He feels embarrassed when he asks questions in class.

If 'feels' was replaced with 'is' as below, would it still sound natural and make sense?

Hi, Yes, there's really not much difference. 'Feels' sometimes suggests that he has no real cause to experience that feeling. ie that his feeling is unjustified.
