what is the difference between communicative language teaching approach and traditional approach?

Top answer

Hi, I think the main difference is that, in communicative language teaching, all learning processes focus on bringing everything that is being taught into practice. Traditional teaching – as I understand it – focuses much of its attention on acquiring grammar rules, vocabulary, chunks etc. and assumes that, somewhere down the line, students automatically 'learn' how to apply this in their speaking and writing.

  • I am quite satisfied with the concept of communicative language teaching as it helps students focus on why they are learning a language, which is 'to use it'.
  • It acknowledges the importance of interaction.
