Eloped?

If a girl goes overseas secretly with her boyfriend to get married, but her parents find out, track the couple down and stop the wedding, can it still be said that the girl "eloped" with her boyfriend?

To me, the idea of "elope" is that there was a marriage.
If the parents intervened in time, it was a failed elopement.

PS My parents eloped, and I am happy for that!

To me, it's the idea of 'running away with the purpose/intention'
