Elliptical Sentences—Thanks and Thank you

When the words Thanks or Thank you are used at the end of an e-mail, does a comma or a period correctly follow each? I believe the period is correct because Thanks and Thank you are elliptical sentences that function as independent comments. Comma or period after Thanks and Thank you?


Examples:

Blah blah blah ...


Thanks,


Joe

These are not complimentary closings. Best regards and Yours truly are. They are elliptical sentences—e.g. Thanks [for your support]. Thank you [for your assistance]. That's why I thought the period was correct, but I often see the comma used erroneously after each. Just confirming here.
