Elliptical Sentence -- "Thank you"

Many memos and emails, I believe, incorrectly employ the use of a comma after 'Thanks' and 'Thank you' at the end.

Example:

Mike,

Blah blah blah .......

Thanks,

Joe

I believe a period should be inserted after 'Thanks' and 'Thank you' because, technically, they are elliptical sentences. Agreed? This was part of a 'punctuation debate' at work.

, it’s tradition to put a comma after thanks or thank you . In all other cases, however, the expression (in isolation) should be followed by a period or an exclamation mark for the reason you gave.
