ellipted use of "would"

Hi,

Is this a case of an ellipted use of the modal "would"? I sometimes am not so sure of using this kind of ellipted uses.Do you think if situtions render themselves some what clearly to the use, should I be also feel good about using the ellipted version? The phrase is "would choose".

From the google book search:

Thank you.

The example of the modal "would" use with an ellipted "if-clause" I was thinking of in this sentence I got from a good search is the underlined part of the sentence, "Which of the two starting points someone would choose may serve to..." from the search sentence below.:

From the google javascript:void(0):

Yes, and this sort of ellipted if-clause is extremely common:

Which of the two starting points someone would choose [if s/he decided to choose]...
What would you say to a movie tonight [if I asked you]?
Would you give me your autograph [if I'm not being impertinent]?
Etc.
