Can I get away with the ellipsis marks in these? Are all of them OK?
1. The auditing department will conduct an investigation.... (Original: The auditing department will conduct an investigation on Monday and will then contact the district manager with its findings.) Is this a correct usage of the ellipsis - four unspaced dots, no space after the "n" in "investigation"?
2. The auditing department will conduct an investigation... (This sentence was intended to trail off. Are three unspaced dots (exactly as I have them) correct in this one, with no space after the "n" in "investigation"?)
3. The ceremony honored twelve brilliant athletes … visiting the U.S.
[Original: "The ceremony honored twelve brilliant athletes from the Caribbean who were visiting the U.S."] Spaced ellipses in this one?
4. To indicate a pause: “You mean ... I ... uh ... we have a test today?”
5. Original quotation: "It need hardly be said that shortness is a merit in words. There are often reasons why shortness is not possible; much less often there are occasions when length, not shortness, is desirable. But it is a general truth that the short words are not only handier to use, but more possible in effect; extra syllables reduce, not increase, vigor.
Revised quotation: "It need hardly be said that shortness is a merit in words. ... hort words are not only handier to use, but more possible in effect; extra syllables reduce, not increase, vigor.
Thanks.
