Ellipsis

Hi,

I was hoping you could explain the following elliptical structure:

**I visited my mother, and they did too.

My question is, in the above sentence, both the two words "my mother" are omitted after the conjunction "and", (1), What's the difference between the verbal ellipsis structure and the sentence with no ellipsis (as in I visited my mother, and they visited my mother too). At least, please advise some subtle differences you may feel, if any;]

(2), What does the latter part of the above sentence mean? Does it mean that they visited my mother too, or they visited their mothers too, please kindly explain.

Thank you!

yanx My question is, in the above sentence, both the two words "my mother" are omitted after the conjunction "and", (1), What's the difference between the verbal ellipsis structure and the sentence with no ellipsis (as in I visited my mother, and they visited my mother too). " is almost never used. The verb "do" is extremely commonly used to avoid repetition: Definition entry of "do": (used as a substitute to avoid repetition of a verb or full verb expression ): I think as you do.
