Elision of this part okay?

Hi. Please help. Can the part in parentheses be elided? I think it can, since the referent "he" is clear and having the pronoun "he" twice makes it redundant.

When (he had or just he) reached a point where he had to respond, he gave this answer.

"When he had/he'd/he reached a point where he had to respond, he gave this answer." is okay.


"When reached a point where he had to respond, he gave this answer." is ungrammatical.

When he reached .... The tense has to match the later "he gave".
