Elevation

Hi,

If a building has two floors, and then at some point a third floor is built over it, can I refer to this as "an elevation of the building"? Meaning that the building has been "elevated"?

Okay, I realize that that might sound a little obscure.
The whole sentence I am translating refers to the collapse of a building during an earthquake.

- The collapse of the elementary school in XXX was the result of the elevation of the building realized in reinforced-concrete which, during the seismic wave, shattered the ordinary masonry underneath, causing the whole building to come crushing down.

I have underlined the words I'm not sure about. Can you please suggest a better wording?

Thank you
H.

Elevation does not sound right, You might say 'upward expansion' but that's not great. It would be better if you could reword the whole sentence. eg The collapse of the elementary school in *** was the result of the addition of a third floor to the building using reinforced concrete which, during the seismic wave, shattered the ordinary masonry underneath, causing the whole building to come cr a shing down

The "elevation" of a building actually means the vertical side of a building, especially as drawn on an architectural plan, so I think it would be particularly confusing to use it in the sense that you are proposing.

I don't think Clive's version can be improved upon. If I were you, I'd use that one.

In the US you might hear something like the following:

The collapse of the elementary school in ____ was the result of the addition of a third level - constructed in reinforced concrete - on top of the original two-story brick building. During the earthquake, the original masonry of the first two floors - tasked with carrying the additional weight of the new floor - was unable to
