Eldest or oldest

Would somebody please help me with the English?

Regards,

Fizzi

1. My eldest son is a doctor or My oldest son is a doctor. Which one is right? Would somebody please give examples of sentences with the correct use of "eldest" and "oldest"?

Top answer

Either is fine here, Fizzi. 'Elder' and 'eldest' are used only for human siblings and offspring, and in older periods for parent to differentiate from offspring of the same name ( Pliny the Elder ). Both words are dying a slow, silent death.
