Whenever we use 'elaborate' in a sentence does it have to be succeeded by 'on'?

Eample:

I would like to elaborate this

I would like to elaborate on this

I don't know about always... you could, for example, simply ask someone to elaborate after they say something.

B: Could you elaborate?

But if you are adding an object, then use "on."

Could you elaborate on that? I would like to elaborate on this.
