Either/or (optional or compulsory)?

Hi Friends,

He had composed a beautiful song, which represented either love or faith.

Is either absolutely necessary here? I am asking because when you have two tiny words like love and faith, it's awkward to include either before them.

Hope to hear your insights.

Thanks.
