Grammar

either or

" So alarming did the state of my finances become, that I soon realized that I must either leave the metropolis and rusticate somewhere in the country, or that I must make a complete alteration in my style of living."--from "A study in scarlet"
I think that "that I must"followed by "or" can be removed.
I have no idea whether the original sentence is correct.

Hello, roach—and welcome to English Forums. First, you should note that A Study in Scarlet was written and published in 1886, well over 100 years ago, and that the fictional narrator speaks in a style artificial even for that time, much less for our own. Nevertheless, making allowances for the changes in structure and punctuation since that time, the sentence is fine.

  • Of course, the sentence could alternatively be written like this: So alarming did the state of my finances become that I soon realized that I must either leave the metropolis and rusticate somewhere in the country or make a complete alteration in my style of living .

Yes, it could, but it would probably be edited.
