Either

1 You may write the letter in French or English.

2. You may write the letter either in French or English.

I know both of the above sentences are fine.
As I know the person's ability of writing both French and English, I am free to use both sentences.

My question is on the second sentence.
What is the necessity of inserting the word 'either' ?
I guess it just emphasize the fact that you are free to write in one of the languages.
I am not sure.
Your thoughts are welcome.
