Egghead

Hello, I'm curious about the word "egghead". Is this a derogatory term or not? Why is "a very studious and academic person" called "egghead"?

Top answer

ESLBeginner, here in the United States, many people use the term "egghead" in a derogatory manner. They feel that a person who spends all of his life studying may not have a realistic view of life -- and human beings. For example, if a university professor runs for mayor, would he know how to handle the "dirty politics" he would face?

  • I do believe, however, that this term is fading from general use and is being replaced by other terms.
