effrontery

Could you explain this sentence to me?

Taken aback by such double effrontery he allowed me to stay.

is it saying that "I" am so bare-bone daring and thick skinned that my effrontery leaves him shake his head, just let me be. Then why double?

I'm afraid there is no context available...

so double is like double agent, double negative in which double is equal but layered, right?

No context: no opinion. It could be just twice as much.
