Effected/affected

"Through History I have learnt to analyse the effects that past events have had on the modern world, and have gained an understanding of how these events have directly affected the formation of our modern language. "

is this correct?

or should it be effected?

In my opinion, affected is the more logical option here because you want to say that these events have directly influenced (affected) the formation of our modern language.

Affect is primarily a verb meaning ‘make a difference to'. Effect is used both as a noun and a verb, meaning ‘a result' or ‘bring about a result'.

so I'd say it's correct. ....these events have directly affected the formation of our modern language.
