What's the difference between "alumni" and "graduates". It seems the meaning is the same though each of these words are used in different contexts. You would say "I'm a college graduate" but "Alumni gathered for the homecoming weekend". But I guess you can't say: "I'm a college alumnus" or "Graduates gathered for the homecoming".

Dicitionary definitions of both words sound quite the same. So what is the difference between them?

Yes, you could say all of those, though strictly an alumnus needn't have graduated.
