Editing vs splitting

Why do we use one T in "editing" and double T in "splitting"? Another word to consider: emit.

There is a rule about doubling the final consonant when adding "ing" like admit will be admitting, stop - stopping.... to edite-the word ends with a vocal.

I don't quite get your answer. What do you mean by "edite"? It is "edit", which ends with a consonant. And "emit" with the "ing" form is "emitting", but both words end with a consonant. So how is it? I'm confused.

Usually, it's to do with the location of the stress. We don't double the T after an unstressed syllable. In "edit", the stress is on the first syllable and the "it" syllable is unstressed, so we don't double the T for "editing". In "emit", the stress is on the second syllable, so we must double the T for "emitting".

Thank you very much. This makes sense.
