Editing

In a short story that I read recently the principal character, Howard travels back in time and returns to the present with a handful of gold pieces. He realizes that the pieces of gold in his possession are valuable enough to make him rich overnight, but he decides against selling it right away and instead opts to lie low for a while. Six months later, when he unlocks his cupboard to look for the gold, he is shocked. The pieces of gold aren’t there anymore.

And possibly--

'...when he unlocks his cupboard to retrieve the gold...'

I'm guessing Howard, six months later, wants to do more than look at them; he's ready to cash them in.
