I have looked up the meaning of the word "edification" in three dictionaries and still don't understand it. Could you please help me!

It more or less means to enlighten, but includes an element of moral improvement.

I'd just like to add a background note, that might help Spring to remember the meaning of the word.

If you look at the Latin roots, they are aedis (temple) + ficium (from the verb facere - to make, eg build). So this supports Forbes's definition of moral improvement, eg building character. Even today, we call a large, impressive building an edifice.
