ECONOMIC PROGRESS-MOST IMPORTANT GOAL?

Hi, I hope I can get some feedback from teachers here. Thank you for reading my essay.

.

Many governments think that economic progress is their most important goal. Some people, however, think that other types of progress are equally important for a country.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

.

Economic development, in many governments’ view, should be deemed as a top priority while many argue that other types of development hold the same importance as well. Considering both sides have their own reasons, I reckon that the development of some particular sectors is as important as that of the economy.

On the one hand, many governments hold the belief that the economy's growth will result in the growth of a country as a whole. They argue that should a country maintain its economic strength, an abundance of resources can be poured into other sectors such as education or entertainment. What is more, a strong economy also means a stable level of happiness for citizens as a result of advanced infrastructure and other services. Despite the aforementioned advantages, some people, on the other hand, claim that other types of progress, rather than being treated as secondary goals or sub-products, ought to be seen as equally important as the economy. Inadequacies of attention towards these areas, namely education and self-defence, may pose harm to economic activities, or even push the country into a vulnerable state.

Taking all viewpoints of each side into consideration, it may be best for governments to sensibly assess the significance of particular areas beyond the economy. While the economy does prove to be a solid ground for national development, the leaders should not undermine the vital role of other areas. Neglect of, say, education will lead to a lack of virtuous and educated young generation, which negatively affects all aspects of a country, economy included. Another good example is that, a country with poor national self-defence investment is prone to constant instability, making it hardly an ideal environment for a thriving economy.

In summary, I believe that some particular types of progress should be treated as equally important as economic progress.
