Eclipse

You have received the highest marks at the examination.

So you have eclipsed all the other students in my previous groups.

The above is from a teacher to one of his students who has done exceptionally well at an examination.

My question is whether the word 'eclipse' is correct in this context. I have a hunch that one should write it in a passive sentence. What do you think?

Top answer

Seems fine, metaphorically speaking. The passive might sound abit impersonal: 1. All the other students in my previous group have been eclipsed by you.

  • All the other students in my previous group have been eclipsed by you.
  • It's grammatical but draws attention away from the student but towards the "other groups of students".
